Anyone know the condition of McKenzie Pass? Lots of snow? A little snow? This year is the year I ride that when bikes can safely get to Sisters.

Last year it was plowed but still closed to cars on May 22-24 when this crazy guy did it, with some great pictures: http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/OhMcKenzie.
PS - This other crazy guy did McKenzie Pass at the same time from the east side: http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/McKenzie2012. He got a picture of the rider in that first link and also another rider up there. Sheesh...crowded!

April 24, 2013 - ODOT crews have cleared a single lane to the summit of the Old McKenzie Pass Highway at Dee Wright Observatory from the east gate. Will continue to clear towards the west. Single lane will melt out until adequate lane with allows two lane vehicular traffice. Check back later for opening day. This is my year to do this dang ride! I'm looking forward to it. |

I got word today that the McKenzie Pass is now open. So, I'm riding it Sunday. Can anyone tell me where the best place to start would be? Thanks

Well, I did the ride yesterday. My wife dropped me off at the beginning of 242on the Eugene side. The road is fantastic, nice and smooth. Beware, however, there's a "lake" in the middle of the route that can't be avoided. My feet were completely covered by water for a good hundred yards. Funny! Glad I did it. Tons of riders were on the road, mostly from Sisters, not from the Eugene side.

I rode from Sisters to the pass and back last Sunday and can happily report that there was no lake in the road on that side. Clear sailing and a beautiful day, but a wee bit windy at the top.
