Shout-Out: Trails of Coeur d'Alenes

I joined an event this weekend up in Idaho, just East of Spokane, WA.

If you're looking for a bike outing... and you are willing to make a weekend of it, or even better, a vacation of it, I will highly recommend becoming familiar with the Trails of Coeur d'Alenes. http://friendsofcdatrails.org/

If you think the Rail2Trail between Banks and Vernonia is nice, multiply that by 4 ...and then some. More wildlife, and a scale you can call GRAND, there is 72 miles of trail an a lot of other rides in the region.

The trip is about 400 miles from Portland; the scenery is breath-taking. Just had to provide a shout-out for those looking for a destination.

I did about a 40 mile stretch in the middle as an out and back a few years ago and I can attest to the beauty of this trail. I saw lots of wildlife including a moose. Quite remote so bring provisions, esp. plenty of water.

This is a truly awesome trail. I did a tour a few years back that took in the entire trail plus the trail along the river from Spokane to Coeur d'Alene.

Cycling across the country last summer, I hopped on to the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes starting in Cataldo heading east to the eastern end in Mullan just short of Lookout Pass into Montana.

Great scenery and a fantastically flat, smooth path.

I'll be doing this ride this summer, most likely in July.

I just wish I could do the entire out-and-back, but 142 miles would be a bit of a stretch. I'll probably make it a century, though.

We have an annual recumbent gathering called the Tater-TOT along the trails. I believe it is in August this year. We gather at Kellogg and do various day rides. Over the years, the entire trail will be covered. There are also many side trails to consider in the area. Just this week, I found a significant trail section out of Spokane as well.

I would recommend finding a good trailhead to start from and ride. Lots of facilities along the way. Even a week long stay would barely let you see all of what is available in the region.
