I dont think the single speed cruiser is really a better idea. First, theyre usually fairly heavy. Second, if you have a hill on your commute or plan on expanding your milage soon hauling a heavy one...

I cut a piece out of an old tube to put over the "U" part of my ulock. It cushions and doesnt scrape my paint now, and since the flat part is already covered in rubber I dont worry about it anymore....
