Job is in Buchanan NY
I think Peekskill is about 40 miles north of New York City. My job though is in Buchanan NY. Right now it is a short 3 mile pedal to work.

I wash mine
In the summer when I sweat a lot, I throw my helmet in the top shelf of the dishwasher about once a month. I make sure there are not other dishes in there and also throw in a bicycle cap or two.

Tillamook to Coos Bay

My two-cents
I'd avoid 26. Two routes I've taken to the coast:
1. Highway 30 all the way to Astoria and then 101 South.
2. Highway 30 to Scappoose and then turn towards Vernonia. Vernonia to Astoria on...

I-205 bike path detour
Take Foster to 87th. Take 87th North and follow the bike path signs. Keep following the signs until you get to Caruthers (just north of Division). Take the bike path north until you get to Burnside....

Dishwasher
I've washed my helmet in the top shelf of my dishwasher. With no dishes in it. I've done the same for those bike hats with the small bill.

Hudson's the name
Hudson is what I call my bike. Not very original since it is a Burley Hudson, but I do refer to it by name.
