Spoke to Shelly Oylear (Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator for Washington County Land Use and Transportation) tonight.

I asked her when can we expect something done about the miserable connection of the bike lane from SW Teal Blvd. and Roy Rogers Rd on SW Scholls Ferry Rd.

Well, I got good news, Washington County is looking into installing buffered bike lanes from Teal to Roy Rogers in both directions. No idea how long we'll have to wait, but this is progress... I've been complaining about that stretch of road since my Mom moved into the area.

It did look like it cleared again after about 30-40 yards, but I turned around. At that point, 13 miles of downhill looked better than1 more up through snow.
Judging from the weather forecast, it should be clear by next weekend

I was riding up on N Lombard up by the Port the other day, just south of Kelley Point. Hadn't been out there since they'd finished the MUP on the east side of the street. While I like the bridge over the slough where N Marine turns into N Lombard, the path beyond is a little tough to ride-- constantly banging on my wrists with each pavement gap. Mind you I'm not on some lightweight race machine, but a 30lb touring bike with 28c tires and it still bugged me.

Since it was Sunday and truck traffic (nay, ALL traffic) was light, I hopped out into the road and just took the lane. A few moments later a semi passed going the opposite direction and the dude actually leaned out his cab, honked his horn, pointed at the path and shouted something I couldn't understand at me. What the hell was his problem? I wasn't in his way; there was practically no traffic, but he felt compelled to give me a hard time about presumably not using the MUP.

...the path that is not only uncomfortable to ride but also forces me to cross directly in front of every vehicular entrance and exit on the street. Hell, it was even partially blocked by a landscaper's truck at one point. The whole thing is just poorly designed. Seems like the drivers would prefer bikes in the road to bikes essentially darting out from the path / sidewalk. Sigh....

This is a road ride along the North route (Hwy 504) up to the Johnston Ridge Observatory at Mount Saint Helens. It starts in Toutle, WA. Since the ride is an out-and-back, you can do as much or as little of it as you feel comfortable with.

I'm regsitered for this and am hoping to make it all the way. I visited Mount Saint Helens for the first time last August and the hiking and scenery is jaw-dropping.
With routes of 32, 45, 55, 77, and 100 miles, there's something for most people to enjoy. I'm signed up to do the 55, but to be honest I'm probably going to be ready for the 77, so I might try to see if I can change my route.

I've never done the ride before, but I hear a lot of people rave about how good Chris King's fajitas are at the end of the ride. :D

There's beautiful scenery up the East Fork of the Lewis River, and campgrounds at Sunset Falls (CycleWild rode there this year) and Rock Creek. The road is a little narrow with some faster traffic, so here's a 2.5 mile stretch where you can have a little break and a peaceful, relaxed ride. It's a Clark County multi-use path (hikers, horses, bikes all OK).

About 1/4 mile east of Lucia Falls County Park, turn off the Lucia Falls Road onto Hantwick Road, cross the Lewis River and pick up the trail in about 1/4 mile, immediately after the road crosses the railroad track. It's not marked but it is obvious; a paved path with bollard. The parking lot is up the road another couple hundred yards but it's steep so the trail is a better way to get there, even if you want to use the porta potties in the parking lot.

The first ~0.7 miles of the path is paved, the next 1.8 is hard-packed, small-crushed gravel over a well-built bed (1/2" minus in fine-grained matrix, not loose!). Skinny-tire riders use your judgement (I suspect you'll be OK) but most touring rigs won't have any problem. All of it is at least 10 feet wide, well-graded and maintained free of bumps, ruts, mud and roots. No cross-streets or motorized traffic. There are nice views of the river, it's all forested (maple, alder, fir, a few cedar), and a couple streams have water (filter or treat it, of course). There are picnic tables at the end of the paving and again near the Moulton Falls bridge at the east end, and a bench overlooking the river in the middle.

On this Google map, "P" is the parking lot on Hantwick Road, and the purple trail is the bike-accessible path. The Bell's Mountain trail in blue is open to bikes but is steep single-track, not part of my suggestion for an easy bypass for touring bikes.

I'm having to move across the country in about a month and have a bike I wish to donate; an old Centurian beater that needs some TLC. I also have a pair of older Shimano wheels that were very good years ago, but need truing. I also have some other bike parts, and maybe more than I realize - I may find some gems while packing!

What I'm hoping to find is one of those neighborhood bike repair people. I see a guy operating out of his house on I think 18th in Sellwood/Brooklyn. And I think there was a guy on SE Rural and about 65th doing the same. And I believe another on SE Holgate around 30th. Ideally I'd give them the bike and parts, and in return they'd do a light tuneup on my good bike - an Eddy Merckx TiAx.

If that fails, I'd be interested in just donating the bike and parts to a good home. Again, it's a clunker, but if you don't have any bike at all and some modest repair skills...

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Has anybody else had a problem with Ortlieb (or similar) panniers grinding away your rack? I noticed mine were actually grinding away my frame and rear derailleur cable housing as well as the rack! I managed to zip-tie a couple of rubber door stops to the bottom part of my rack to prevent the frame rubbing, but man! These bags are going to make my rack useless within two years of use! I never considered my racks to be "consumables" before, but it's starting to look like they have turned into that. I figure once I can see through to the inside of my rack tubing, it's time to get a new rack.

If you've had this problem, are there any good solutions? Tape for the rack? Padding for the hard plastic bits of the bags? Stainless steel racks (I've got tubular Al)?

Yesterday, two of my cycling-oriented mags arrived in the mail - Bicycling and Momentum. (I've subscribed to Bicycling since the late 70s but am a fairly new subscriber to Momentum. I also take Bicycle Times.) Flipping through them last night I was stuck by the observation that was no one smiling in Bicycling but everyone was smiling in Momentum. This difference was so striking that I gathered some data by counting whether people were smiling or not.

Bicycling
No smile Smile
Ads 17 17
Articles 37 9

Momentum
No smile Smile
Ads 9 28
Articles 9 61

Other observations included that Bicycling has car ads while Momentum has none. More importantly, Bicycling only has ads for non-alcoholic beer while Momentum has microbrew ads.

This is all just an observation. Perhaps I was a recreational rider in the old days however over the years I've become much more of a full-time utility cyclist. I have a hard time with car ads in Bicycling and their obsession with frame materials. I won't be renewing. I highly recommend both Momentum and Bicycle Times for informative utility, fun cycling.
